Fishing Islamorada - Feb 17 - 19, 2005

Thursday, February 17 - Fishing with Capt. Glen Miller on the Gon Fishin' V

Ian's best buddy from kindergarten, Kelly Surkon, and his colleague and good friend, Jeff Beaton, flew down for Daytona 500...a few days early  to meet us in Islamorada for two awesome days of fishing with Capt. Glen Miller on the Gon Fishin' V.

The weather was iffy, so Capt. Glen decided we'd stay closer in. First step, catch barley and bait.

We're catching bait at the lighthouse and Kelly hooks up.. He's on and it's a gaffer...

The boat is blessed when Kelly catches his first Baracuda!

Then we go deep dropping...some 450 feet. Letting out line takes a minute, hooking up is almost instantaneous, reeling up takes more time and effort, but every turn of the crank is worth it! Here's Jeff with his first Snowy Grouper...it'll be hours before he tastes this delectable fish!

Mate Sammy holds Jeff's fish for the camera...

We caught more fish than pictures...
we have only one of Ian with this little snapper...

Mid-day, we hit on a school of dolphin (aka Dorado and Mahi Mahi). Jeff brought a digital camera with, get this, 1 Gig chips! Move your mouse over a video to see some of the action.

This is our best guess at our catch of the day...and look, most fish are 2 deep on the rungs!
Mangrove Snapper , Vermillion Snapper, Tile Fish, Snowy Grouper, Porgie, Mahi Mahi (2),
Yellow Tail, Mahi?...Mackeral? (we caught a King), Snowy Grouper, Vermillion , Yellow, Vermillion...

Fifty fish filled our cooler! All other boats are in...we don't see their fish.
Well, it's not that they didn't catch any, it's just that we fished with Capt. Glen...
aka "The Midnight Man"...he's always last to come back to the dock!

Capt. Glen prides himself in going "overboard" to please his customers...
That's fishing aboard the Gon Fishin' V for catch of the day!

Thank you, again, Captain Glen and Sam!
